 Loudspeaker DIY Projects

(A marriage made in heaven ?)

A few years ago, the critics raved about the NHT Super Zero, how it's woofer/mid
out performed systems costing ten times as much, if you didn't need really deep bass.
About the same time, the same critics raved about Radio Shack's LX5 PRO, they
said the woofer/mid had faults, but the tweeters rivaled tweeters costing much more.
One critic said that when placed away from walls the tweeter (Linaeum) "loses its self".
Well you can guess what's coming.
Note: This is a Frankenstein project (using all the best parts).

Three liter (net) box made from ½" MDF,  with a double front
baffle, and covered with ¼" oak plywood. Front edges are routed
to accept ¾" quarter-round oak moldings. And front to back and
rear edges are routed to accept 3/8" quarter-round oak moldings.
Use of these quarter-round moldings eliminate the need to miter
the edges, and also minimize "edge diffraction".

Edge moldings installed, driver and terminal cutouts routed. Note:
3/8 X 3/8 quarter-round molding installed on the top edges to form a
  mounting  base for the tweeter.

Boxes are sanded, sanding sealer applied, two coats of polyurethane
applied. Crossover and screen standoffs installed.

Tonegen 458 4 ¼" woofer-mid as used in the NHT Super Zero, and
the Linaeum tweeter as used in the Radio Shack LX5 PRO are installed.
Input terminals installed. Crossover is a 3 mH, 14 ga. coil in series with
the woofer/mid and a 6 µ capacitor in series with the tweeter.

  Finished speaker with screen.

  Subwoofer

Basic box with divider/brace made
with 1" MDF.

Box covered with ½" MDF, then covered
with ¼" red oak plywood.  Solid oak
moldings installed on all edges.

Focal 10V516 is installed.

Automotive type metal grill is installed.

Computer work station:   Table top sitting on the subwoofer boxes is 1" MDF covered with oak plywood with 1 ½" half-round solid oak on all edges.
The amp/electronic crossover is sitting on a shelf below the desk top. The "marriage made in  heaven" speakers are on either side of the monitor. No problems with stray magnetic fields have  been encountered. Visible to right rear is one of my rear channel speakers for the main system,  a home built Aurora7 speaker using a Focal 7K415 and a Focal TC90Tdx.
Also visible is a bottle of Windex behind the left speaker, use to clean the CRT <grin>.
