Building the Audax 652 Loudspeaker

Note: To enlarge an image, left click on the image with your mouse.

An Audax 652 based stereo system. The countertop is in two pieces
so the base cabinets may be arranged in an "L" shape if desired.

Another view. Equipment shelves are easily changed or
modified to accept new or different equipment.

The  plans and crossover information are not available anymore from Audax,
nor are the mid/woofers. Substitutions can be made however.
I used the Audax HM170CO Mid/woofer and the Audax TWO25MO Tweeter.

After I obtained the plans for the 652 from Audax, I didn't like the proportions of the box, too high for the width, We know we need the narrowest possible width of the box to enjoy superior "imaging". I redrew the plans to achieve the narrowest possible width that would accommodate the drivers, and reduced the height as much as possible. I allowed for extra internal bracing and calculated the needed depth to keep the original interior volume.

Crossover is assembled on "peg board". Separate high
and low pass boards are used.
All crossover parts are from: North Creek Music

Front view of the box, made with 1" MDF, an extra ½" MDF on the
front, and covered entirely with ¼" red oak plywood. Port is installed,
all front edges are routed to accept ¾" quarter round solid oak moldings.
All front to back edge sand all rear edges are routed to accept 3/8" quarter round oak moldings.

Stands were made from ¼" steel square tubing, with a ½" thick
steel plate on the bottom, covered with oak plywood and 1 ½"
half round oak moldings on the edges.
The top plate was 3/16" steel, welded to the tubing .
Spikes were made from 3/8" cap screws, ground to a point.

A friend approached me after seeing and hearing the system above, and
asked if I could build them a pair of Audax 652s and equipment cabinets.
He specified he would like a dark stain on the oak to match other furniture.
Several years later he requested adding a sub woofer and rear speakers to use in a home theater.

My friend also wanted matching equipment cabinets. So I
built two with shelves, drawers, and bronze tinted glass doors.

The following powered sub woofer and left & right rear (surround) speakers were built years later.
