Aria 5 And Aurora 7

FRONT VIEW OF THE SYSTEM
Pair of Aria 5s atop the EdgerHorns, and an Aria 5 center channel atop the TV.
The TV is a 42" Toshiba Plasma. The main system is powered by custom, home built AKSA amps
(one 3 channel & one 2 channel) and the NHT 1259 subs are powered by
a pair of Adcom GFA 555 II power amps, bridged.
The TV base houses a pair of WR128S full range speakers aided by an Extremis 6.8 powered
subwoofer behind the TV. This is used for the TV audio only,
when not playing through the main audio system.
The Horns atop the subwoofers are EdgarHorns, used for background music only,
powered by a separate Preamp/tuner/power amp.

Aria 5 Construction Details

After seeing the plans and an explanation of the Aria 5,
designed by Joe D'Appolito, I decided to build a pair.

I was satisfied with the results as were several friends who wanted copies. I made four more pairs and all who received them were very satisfied also.
After a few years my cabinets were getting "shop worn" from being dragged to
various demonstrations. While looking at Orca's home page  I
noticed a new cabinet design for the Aria 5. The new design used 1" MDF instead of ¾" MDF,
and had a circular vent instead of a rectangular vent. I decided to build some new cabinets for my Aria 5s using the old components.

The new cabinet didn't look to be as well braced as the original, so I calculated new dimensions for new
cabinet to allow additional bracing and keep the same net interior volume.

Note the added bracing (both front baffles shown).

The 1" MDF was covered with ¼" red oak plywood, and solid red oak moldings
were used on all edges.

allow bi-wiring.

Adding a Center Channel For the Aria 5s

The box before attaching the front.
Made a box to match the left and right Aria 5s from ¾" MDF with separate chambers for the two woofers and a chamber for the tweeter. Raised the tweeter position on the front from the "MTM" arrangement on the Aria 5s. Added a panel of ½" MDF on the front to allow easy installation of solid oak molding on the edges.

Temporarily installed the front panel with
screws to facilitate the crossover design, also
temporarily installed the drivers.

Connected wires to the drivers and ran them
out the vents to design the crossover.

¼" oak plywood has been installed on all sides
and solid oak moldings have been installed on
all edges. Crossovers and drivers are installed.

speaker. Separate terminals are used for the
woofers and tweeter to allow bi-wiring.

Below is an earlier  picture of the front of the main system
with a center channel speaker added to facilitate SACD
and DVD-Audio multi channel media.

This is the previous room arrangement that preceded the pictures at the top of this page.
The new arrangement serves multi-channel listening much better without compromising the stereo imaging.
(My girlfriend, Sasha laying in front of the TV, has since gone to doggie heaven)
